Fish attacks and more

Posted by

Well kids,

It’s happened again. Today I was attacked, but not by a little damsel fish, no, this time it was a huge, sharp toothed Titan Triggerfish. She tried to take a chunk out of Auntie Krista but I’m happy to report that all she got was a bite of my fin.

We’re back in the Philippines, yay! And, as you know, it’s always more fun in the Philippines, even when you are getting attacked by fish.

I was swimming along minding my own business and stopped to take some photos of some Anemonefish, which are my favorite, when out of the blue I felt a very hard, very aggressive tug on my fins. When I turned around there was a big old Titan Triggerfish with her trigger up, giving me the stink eye. I knew another attack was imminent unless I took evasive action.

Luckily, I remembered my triggerfish training. You see, the triggerfish is territorial but, in her eyes, her territory spans upward in a cone shape. So you have to stay close to the ocean floor and book it out of there horizontally, which is exactly what Auntie Krista did. Uncle Richard has never seen me swim so fast!

We also saw many other perfectly pleasant sea creatures that didn’t try to bite me. Some of my favorites that I always see in the Philippines are the nudibranches. They are small mollusks that have shed their shells and have to find other ways to protect themselves. Some are brilliantly colored to make other sea creatures think they are toxic. Some really are toxic but that’s okay because I don’t try to eat them.

What I do try to eat, on the other hand, is all the noodles I can fit in my tummy. The Philippines has one of my favorite noodle dishes called pancit bihon. It is made of small rice noodles called glass noodles. Noodles were originally introduced to the Philippines by the Chinese and in Chinese culture they symbolize long life and good health. I ate a giant helping of pancit bihon last night and then had the leftovers for breakfast. I think they are what helped me outrun that triggerfish!

****UPDATE****

Our week in the Philippines is coming to a close and “someone” is very proud of himself. 12 dives, 0 fish attacks and 1 giant piece of chocolate cake.

  1. You get more excitment then I think I want! But the noodles look great. I was going to check if you want to skype this weekend but I see you are on a fun weekend. Let us know what we can sometime.

Love and miss you and be careful when you dive.
